I would say it's antithetical to a degree. We do have an impact on our lives by the decisions we make so we are "self-shaping" somewhat. Everything is connected with every other thing and so every action has consequences. But the pseudo scientific notion that because we observe things we effect those things cannot be logically extrapolated to mean that there is some sort of spiritual essence to us that is predetermining what happens in our physical circumstances. It's not like "The Secret" where you can make positive things happen to yourself if you simply think positive thoughts. You can be as positive as you want and still not be able to avoid some negatives.

The problem with the logic is that it presupposes that our personal spirituality or psyche is the only or predominant cause of what we experience. Reality suggests that our personhood is only one small drop in the cosmic bucket so that many things and circumstances happen to us which are outside our control. I am a true individual. But so is everyone else. I am a true physical object, but so is every other bit of matter and we all are "equals" in a cause and effect world.

I can react to anything, but I cannot cause everything.

Some people say that we make our own reality, and we This conversation triggers an internal conversation that I have had over the years. Some people say we are the authors of our own experience. They believe that we somehow set up what we say "happens" to us. we make decisions that create the conditions of our lives, and then most of us say that it "happened" to us. I have even heard people say that disease and accident and criminal victimization are things that we set up. Is that perspective antithetical to Christianity...or not?

Good point. I'll bet there are those that wish God would limit our choices even more than He does.

I think God creates true freedom for humans by knowing all possibilities. But I think humans are limited by whatever parameters God has in place. So our "freedom" is to move about within a certain range of possibilities rather than a boundriless absolute freedom.

It's sort of like a mom who tells her kids they can have either peas or carrots....there is a true "choice" at hand but not all possibilities are made available.

God retains sovereignty without ever losing control of any situation while humanity still has real freedom.

The terms "free will" and "being free" are different.

When God created man, man was not free. Here is why I believe this.

According to the Bible man was created on the sixth day (I'm not a young earth creationist) and God rested on the seventh day. Then the Bible talks about the garden and man's rule over the earth, until (Genesis 2:16-17);

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

then, man had "free will" or choice. Until that time where God commanded man, we had no choice. We were free to act but not to choose. Choice was given by God after he created man, not before. I do believe that it was in God's plan for this to happen, because the Bible did not mention any set rules prior to those given to man. God had freedom of choose prior to creating the universe and man, so choice was handed down to man and not created for man.

Every choice you will ever make has a consequence, or a cause and effect, as did Adam and Eve's. The catch is, you are free to choose but not completely free.

If we choose to be civilized, we are limited to choices that are acceptable within the standards of moral value. Step outside those moral standards, and you are punished. Step way outside, and they make a movies about you.

God sent Jesus to be the lasting path to our freedom. So, yes God Almighty is freedom. By the way, I choose Him.
